Family Dance in Cultural Venues
Our Dance Events in Museums, Galleries and Cultural Venues
We offer themed dance workshops for families (children aged 0-8) and school groups (KS1 and KS2) in cultural venues like museums and art galleries.
Our workshops are designed to engage participants with the venue’s exhibitions and collections through movement and dance activities. These events are themed according to the venue and use dance to explore specific collections or exhibitions. We might draw inspiration from a single artwork, the story behind an exhibition, the techniques used by the artist, or the historical and social context of the artwork, and use these as starting points for movement games and dance activities.
By engaging in dance and movement to explore a topic, participants form a personal and lasting connection to the theme, exhibition, and museum. We use embodied learning to connect with art, focusing on the emotions, thoughts, and ideas behind the artwork rather than attempting to recreate it on paper.
As with all Me&Baby Dance sessions, the aim is to spark joy and creativity in participants while supporting connections on an individual and group level. These workshops are a fun and engaging activity for everyone involved. We are passionate about making art and cultural venues feel accessible to young audiences, giving them agency through creative expression.
Outcomes
By the end of our workshops, participants will have:
- Engaged in Creative Exploration: Explored topics and artworks through dynamic movement and dance activities, thereby creating their own responses to themes, sharing ideas with the group, and integrating verbal and visual cues into their movements.
- Enhanced Cultural Venue Experience: Discovered where to find the discussed objects or themes at the venue, sparking a deeper interest and further exploration.
- Fostered Family and Friendship Bonds: Enjoyed quality time together, strengthening connections through shared experiences.
- Developed Movement Skills: Had the opportunity to dance in relation to themselves, their family members or friends, and the larger group, fostering individual and group connections.
Where do we offer this?
- Cultural Venues: Enrich visitor experience with movement sessions at museums, art galleries, botanical gardens, and more.
- Community Spaces: Highlight a piece of local history or seasonal event through our workshops at community halls, historical sites, outdoor parks, and other local venues.

Drawing Room – Movement and Mark Making
Dance workshops for the exhibition The Earth is Knot Flat by Emma McNally, Drawing Room, December 2024.
Family Dance: we explored 3D shapes through movement games, using props such as building dens with materials and torches. We created our own installation and explored its shape through movement. The exhibition ‘explodes’ the idea of drawing, making it very visceral and three-dimensional.
Baby Dance: we explored a theme of connections: to self, to baby, to others, and to the group as a whole. The concept of connections between smaller groups forming a whole was one of the core ideas behind the exhibition.
School Dance: we worked with a primary school class to explore elements of the exhibition, including techniques the artist used and the contrast between seeing details and the bigger picture. We started with a warm-up, worked in smaller groups for focused activities, and then came together to create an installation and dance as a group.
We reached new audiences who had not visited before but now look forward to attending future exhibitions and family events at the Drawing Room.
Garden Museum – Earth Day
A Family Dance workshop exploring trees, and our influence at each level of connection to self, others and the larger community.
Garden Museum – Butterflies
A Family Dance workshop exploring the four life stages of a butterfly, including body rolling caterpillars and a ginormous chrysalis.
